Thanks for all the information. I suspected something along those lines had 
happened, but I had no idea of the details. And I do remember, now that you 
mention it, that some of the early editions in the Works of Mark Twain had 
"Iowa-California" on the spine, or something like that.

It's too bad the whole catalog didn't get finished back in the 1980s or 
'90s, but at least the California Press did manage to get all those volumes 
of unfinished or unpublished writings into print. As far as I know, there 
are five of them -- Fables of Man, Mysterious Stranger Manuscripts, Hannibal 
Huck & Tom, Satires & Burlesques, Which was the Dream? -- and they're all 
excellent, including the introductions. I've just recently re-read all but 
one of them, and besides containing a lot of good writing, they're also 
indispensable for anybody who wants a full picture of Twain's artistic mind.
