That reminds me of a while back, when one of my
relatives expressed contempt for George Washington,
because he kept slaves.  It occured to me we shouldn't
expect anyone to live in an age other than the one he
was born into--there is a limit to how forward
thinking even a great man can be. My guess it that
despite all his sympathy for black people, Twain
wouldn't have accepted a "mixed" marriage very well.
