*NEWS from the Mark Twain Circle of New York:*

*August 8 Walking Tour Will Trace the Footsteps of Mark Twain the New
Yorker*

NEW YORK CITY, August 2, 2015 — Just 111 years ago, in August 1904, Mark
Twain rented a mansion on Fifth Avenue, where he would spend most of his
remaining years. To celebrate the great humorist's many links with this
city, writer and Twain expert Peter Salwen will lead a 90-minute walking
tour, “Mark Twain’s New York,” at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 8.

“People don’t generally associate Mark Twain with New York,” says Salwen,
“but in his day he was just about the biggest celebrity in town. And at the
same time, New York itself played a major role in advancing and shaping
Twain’s personal and family life as well as his career and ideas.”

“Mark Twain’s New York” includes stops at more than two dozen Twain-related
landmarks and sites, including a Broadway publishing house that turned down
his first book, the hotel where he met the young woman he would soon marry,
and the Greenwich Village home where he composed his *Autobiography*— a
book that would became a surprise best-seller in 2010, a full century after
his death. Also included will be the real explanation of how Sam Clemens,
the man behind the famous pseudonym, came to start calling himself “Mark
Twain” in the first place — a recently discovered story that, happily
enough, also had its roots in New York City.
