The Paine biography (Vol.1, page 205) and *Mark Twain's Letters Vol. 1*
should satisfy your curiosity.  Although MT's fortunes were so low that he
had walk through one-hundred thirty miles of desert to reach Virginia City,
I think you'll agree that his journey was not exactly a "road to Damascus."
