On September 7, 1998, Mr. Paul Saffo of the Institute for the Future,
Silicon Valley, appeared on the Jim Lehrer NEWSHOUR and during the
interview, which covered the internet and technology, he commented that
Mark Twain said:
I'm all for progress; it's change I object to.
Oh, so like Mark Twain! He captures the irony so well.
However, when I contacted Mr. Saffo, he was not able to document where
this comment appeared in Twain's writings. I have searched some of the
standard books, i.e., Harnsberger, "Twain at Your Fingertips" and Ayers,
"Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain." The Twain project at UC Berkeley also
looked for me, but to no avail.
Could someone help me document this comment? I realize that it may not be
an actual Clemens statement. I will be most grateful for your help.
Thank you very much.
