: Re: River culture questions

> Thomas Ruys Smith, _River of Dreams: Imagnining the Mississippi before
Mark Twain_ (Baton Rouge: LSUP, 2007 might be helpful. I'm not convinced by
Smith's conclusions, but he cites and disucsses a huge list of sources about
river culture up to about 1860.

This sparks memory of another book of possible use, Before Mark Twain, A
Sampler of Old, Old Times on the Mississippi, edited by John F McDermott
(Southern IL U Press, 1968), an anthology of river writings prior to Twain,
but mostly travel accounts, memoirs, and diaries, rather than literary
works. Covers Flint to the Civil War, and includes one story (a Jack
Pearce/Mike Fink encounter) about a man actually named Nigger Jim (NOT
Twain's Jim).
