...with all due respect, isn't that a bit too easy? And how is this
supposed to help?
For years now, following all this insanity from the - unexpected, and
often uneasy - vantage point of belonging with a people that fell for a
demagogue and his minions almost 90 years ago, i have been wondering
about figures like Pap Finn, but also about Huck, Tom, and Twain
himself in relation to the Trump followers. Much of this is about White
privilege. About privilege anyway. About those who are holding on to
their privileges, and those that think they are entitled to them (even
though they will likely never get there). Of course there were stuffed
ballot boxes in US history - frequently, and not just in the rural
South. Of course there has been voter suppression, and gerrymandering,
and buying and selling of votes - only that the ones protesting now
usually and historically had these irregularities working in their
favor, and now they can't imagine that they may have lost fairly, just
like Pap Finn cannot imagine an Africamerican voting.
Just like the Civil War, the current situation is an attempt at a
regressive counterrevolution, and i am afraid we haven't seen the
beginning of it.
But dangerous as i think this situation is, I wouldn't call all of
these people the likes of Pap Finn. Since i double as a firefighter
(engine lieutenant, VFD),i have friends in the US in- and outside of
the academe, and to be honest i sometimes feel more comfortable in the
firehouses. As long as we don't talk politics. They are great people.
Most of them are not more racist, or transphobic, or reactionary than
the rest of Western societies are, on the average -- who of us hasn't
been through this debate with students: was Twain a racist? But they
voted Trump, many of them twice. And some believe the election was
stolen. So i ask why they think that? Who's told them? And pretty soon
it becomes apparent that we are not talking political thinking, but
religious belief systems here (and we Germans better be careful,
because this is spreading over here, too).
We may need a lot more teaching of Huck Finn in schools, and in town
hall meetings, and whereever, not to educate, but to win these people
back. They are not just Kings, and Dukes, and Paps. At least i wouldn't
subscribe to that one -
