In response to Susan Dorman's query, I know of several fictional treatments of
Mark Twain. He figures prominently in Philip Jose Farmer's "Riverworld" science
fiction series. He also shows up in Harry Turtledove's alternate history novel,
HOW FEW REMAIN, and in another alternate history (I don't recall the author,
but it was an Ace paperback) called NEVER THE TWAIN. There is also a young
adult mystery which I own but haven't had the chance to read, ALICE ROSE & SAM.
And there are others... if memory isn't playing tricks on me, I believe he
shows up in Robert Heinlein's JOB, though I wouldn't particularly recommend
that book unless you insist on reading every word Heinlein ever wrote. And
there are quite a few others...

Among which, if I may be forgiven a moment of self-promotion, are half a dozen
historical mysteries of which I am the author, a couple of which have received
favorable comments hereabouts. The publisher has told me that the sales don't
justify my continuing the series, but the six Mark Twain mysteries I did
finish are still available many places online and in used bookstores.

Shelly Fisher Fiskin's LIGHTING OUT FOR THE TERRITORY is the authoritative
book on treatments of Twain and his work in popular culture. I expect she'll be
along any minute to list some of the ones I've forgotten.
