Am trying to track down the background for a quote Hamlin Hill used in _Mark
Twain: God's Fool_. The edition I have apparently has a typo preceding
the quote which appears on page 224 of the book which makes it difficult to
determine how Twain used the passage. The reference material for the quote
that Hill gives states it appears in a Los Angeles Times, 1951 newspaper.
Has the newspaper article been reprinted or the background on the suicide
statement appeared elsewhere?

This topic is covered briefly in the CD Twain's World which stated Paine
revealed Sam considered suicide briefly after the Sandwich Islands tour.

Any info appreciated,
Barb
