Dr. Howard G. Baetzhold passed away at home in Indianapolis on July 7,
2012.  A graduate of Brown University and the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Baetzhold served on the English faculty of
Butler University from 1953-88 and from 1981-1985 was head of its
English department.  In 1981, he was named the Rebecca Clifton Reade
Professor of English Emeritus and in 1988 was named a prestigious
Sagamore of the Wabash (1988) by Indiana Governor Robert D. Orr.

Dr. Baetzhold's publications include Mark Twain and John Bull: The
British Connection (Indiana,1970) and, with Joseph B. McCullough, The
Bible According to Mark Twain: Writings of Heaven, Eden, and the Flood
(University of Georgia Press, 1995) and The Bible According to Mark
Twain (Touchstone Books, 1996).

At Elmira 2001:  The Fourth International Conference on the State of
Mark Twain Studies, Dr. Baetzhold received the Henry Nash Smith Award
recognizing his lasting contributions to Mark Twain Studies.  Dr.
Baetzhold and his wife, Nancy, who preceded him in death in 2011, have
two children, Howard King Baetzhold and Barbara Millard Baetzhold
Miller.

Dr. Baetzhold was born in Buffalo, NY, on January 1, 1923.  A Memorial
Service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00
p.m. in The Johnson Room in Robertson Hall at Butler University, 4600
Sunset Lane, Indianapolis, IN  46208.
