my fellow twainiacs,

Here's the latest update on the attempts by the Clackamas School District
to ban HF. It doesn't look good, as Libby says. So much for our
"progressive" state where county sheriff's support the illegal take-over of
federal land. But hey, you can legally by marijuana.

Hello, Dr. and Mrs. Eddings.
This is Libby Csergei again. I just wanted to give you some feedback
regarding the committee meeting from last night regarding the *Huckleberry
Finn* controversy in the North Clackamas School District.

Here's some feedback from our staff member, who is the sole English teacher
on the committee (and who teaches* HF*):

The first comment by any of the panel was a motion to ban the book. So a
committee member had to fight that off and get a discussion going to
postpone that notion to next week's meeting.
Committee members responding saying "this is about whether or not we trust
teachers to teach social justice" with "I do not trust Nclack employees to
teach social justice. That's a parent's job."
Committee members had not read the packet of information and testimony
(which they've had since 2/17) from outside people (like me), and one
committee member had to spend a majority of the speaking time explaining
satire to the rest of the committee - which resulted in them saying "I wish
you had been teaching this book, but we can't guarantee that every teacher
will teaching it like you, and we can't take the risk of hurting a kid."

It is not looking good at this point. I will keep you updated.

Best to you for a good week!
-Libby
