Joe is correct.  I have written an essay almost uncannily
similar to what Hal describes.  It's called "Mark Twain's
Music Box: Livy, Cosmopolitanism, and the Commodity Aesthetic,"
which will appear in the volume "Cosmopolitan Twain," edited
by Ann Ryan and Joe McCullough, forthcoming from University
of Missouri Press next month.  Hal, if you'd like to see a copy
of the essay before that, just let me know.
