When SLC was working on the Virginia City "Enterprise" his fellow
coworker was "Dan De Quille" (William Wright). He wrote a book about the
details of life and mining in the Comstock called "The Big Bonanza". It
was published by the American Publishing Co. in 1876. That company's
other authors included Mark Twain, C. D. Warner, Bret Harte and others.
There is a reprint from Alfred A. Knopf Co. published in 1967 that may
be available. It is from a series called "Western Americana, edited by
Oscar Lewis and Robert Glass Cleland. There are 439 pages, it is a very
detailed account of life in the mines and the history of the territory.
Unfortunately, I can find no reference to SLC in it, but it does offer
good supplelemental material about the era. SLC was hired in the year
that De Quille started and the book took shape in Twain's study in
Hartford in 1875. Recommended reading, easy style, many drawings, for
those who are particularly interested in "Roughing It".
