Harold, an excellent starting place would be Horst H. Kruse's contribution
to the MT Encyclopedia, which includes a bibliography, and briefly traces
the
evolution of Sam's thought about the river. Kruse points out the
contributions of Twichell and Howells to awakening Sam to "all phases of the
river's
life." pages 518-20
