I recall reading on the liner notes for the Mark Twain Tonight LP that
Hal Holbrook used both rare film footage to study his manner and gramophone
recordings to study his voice.  They exist somewhere.

On the subject of locating the recordings, may I suggest two very large
sound recording archives: The New York Public Library and the Library of
Congress?  The Smithsonian might have them in their collection as well.
