Hal--

According to Loving's bio, which also conforms to what I recall from Fears's _Day by Day_, Twain was in Chicago in Mid-April of 1893, to discuss matters with Paige. However, he was ill and remained in his hotel and skipped the World Exposition. He returned to europe on May 6th. The family moved from Florence to Munich in June. Twain sailed back to NY in late August and didn't rejoin the family in Paris until mid-MArch 1894.

Don't know if this helps, but it seems like the only opportunity to cross paths was during Twain's visit in Chicago, except illness kept him out of circulation.

It would have been in spring 1893; after Muir went to Chicago World
Exposition and before he left for Europe in the final days of June.
