The April 2010 issue of Knowledge, published by the British Broadcasting
Company, features Mark Twain on the front cover and an article by Twain
scholar Peter Messent, of the University of Nottingham. The article,
called "Mark Twain: Did America Let Him Down?" reviews the life - especially
the later years - and notes that Twain's 'approach to issues of race and
nationhood was far more cosmopolitan, relativistic, and liberal than the
vast majority of his contemporaries.' There's also a 'For & Against'
face-off between Shelley Fisher Fishkin and Paul Giles on the question 'Was
Mark Twain America's Most Important Novelist?' Be sure to check your
library for a copy of this very interesting material.'
