In reviewing the old Forum logs I've noticed a number of references
to books with Twain as a fictional character and thought some Forum
readers might also want to look up Howard Fast's book, _Silas
Timberman_ (N.Y.: Blue Herron Press, 1954). It does not have Twain
as a character, but the story revolves around Timberman's troubles
during the McCarthy era -- all of which start because he centers a
class in American Literature around "The Man Who Corrupted
Hadleyburg." Twain comes up from time to time throughout the story,
and Twain's face is on the dustjacket. It's an interesting example
of what Twain means to people at different historical times.
