That's sad news. Not likely for scrap metal since they left Ossip behind. 
Perhaps a prank or a dare?

What size was the original plaque? If it does not show up soon I have a 
plaster cast by Ernfred Anderson that measures about 17 inches across from 
which a temporary replacement might be cast in metal.
