Position Description
Assistant Professor of American Literature.  The English Department
at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a tenure track Assistant
Professorship in American literature and culture, with a secondary
interest in Ethnic American Literatures and cultures.  This position
is dependent upon final budget approval.

Required: Applicants must have a solid background in American
Literature, show evidence of successful teaching, and demonstrate the
promise of significant scholarly research.  Completion of the Ph.D.
in English is required before the date of the appointment.
Preferred: A secondary interest in one or more American ethnic
literatures (e.g. Latino/a, Asian, Caribbean).  Responsibilities
include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses,
establishing a solid research program, and serving on departmental,
college, and university committees.  Successful applicants will also
show a commitment to advising and mentoring students.

position is filled; interviews will likely be held at the MLA
Convention in Washington, DC.  Salary will be competitive and
commensurate with experience.

The Department of English has a large and diverse faculty and offers
a B.A., M.A., and M.F.A. in English;  a new Ph.D. in Rhetoric and
Writing is in the process of being put into place.  The Department
also has flourishing undergraduate programs in Literature, Language,
and Culture; Creative Writing; and Professional Writing.  It is
currently developing a new track in Ethnic American Literatures which
will draw on courses from other disciplines, including Foreign
Languages & Literatures.   The faculty of the English Department
value and excel in both teaching and research, which are supported by
state-of-the-art computer equipment accompanied by regular faculty
development workshops.  The successful candidate will teach two
courses each semester.

Virginia Tech is a Carnegie classified research-extensive university
offering approximately 75 undergraduate and graduate degree programs,
with multiple majors, minors, options, and concentrations.  The
university enrolls approximately 21,500 undergraduate and 5,000
graduate students on the Blacksburg campus and 2,000 students off
campus at six major sites which include instruction as part of their
mission.  The main campus is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, a
college town of 40,000 people nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge
Mountains, where outdoor recreational opportunities abound.
