a good list of minor references is on Wikipedia:

also, please do not forget the many references in modern songs, such as "Tom
Sawyer" by Rush ( a really, really cool song);  or  Belle & Sebastian's
"This is Just A *Modern* Rock *Song.*"  Or the musical "Big River."
