You should read Justin Kaplan's Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain: A Biography,
Touchstone Books; ISBN: 0671748076.  But, Bernard Devoto's Mark Twain's
America can't be beat for a understanding the American cultural and
political history of the Mississippi and the West.
