I, too, just finished Carkeet's article in the Smithsonian. I did
enjoy it, mainly; however, I was disappointed by Terrell Dempsey's
unfortunate comments about Twain and Hannibal.

Subject: Carkeet article in Smithsonian

If it was mentioned here already, I missed it. I just read -The
TwainShall Meet- in the April 2014 Smithsonian magazine (my favorite.)
It wasfun to read since Ihope I might be somewhere on the Mississippi
after a trip to New Orleans inFebruary. Two details in it I didn't
remember ever hearing before. One was themention of a young Samuel
Clemens applying for a stipend from someAbolitionists and the other
that he once was a stowaway on a river boatwhen he was young. If any of
you missed the article by David Carkeet, I recommend that youcheck it
out at Smithsonian.com.-- Arianne Laidlaw
