Greetings from the Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies:

Now that winter has finally broken its hold on the Northeast (we hope) it's
time to come out of hiding and take in a slate of great lectures to be held
in April and May.  Aside from the first lecture, all will be held at Quarry
Farm, easily accessible from East Avenue in Elmira.  As usual, "The Trouble
Begins at Eight" (P.M. that is).

"A 3-D Projection Presentation Featuring Mark Twain and his Home Circle of
Elmira and Park Church Friends."  Brandt Rowles
Brandt Rowles, from Loveland, Ohio, is an expert and collector of
stereoscopic views, early photographia, and daugerreotypes.  He is the
co-author, with Robert H. Hirst, the general editor of The Mark Twain
Project, of an article entitled, "William E. James' Stereoscopic Views of the
Quaker City Excursion."

"The Loss of a Daughter, the Death of a Republic:  Personal and Political
Dimensions of Mark Twain's Despair"  Jim Zwick
Jim Zwick is a Ph.D. candidate in the Interdisciplinary Social Science
Program at Syracuse University.  He is the author of numerous articles on
Mark Twain and is the editor of _Mark Twain's Weapon's of Satire:
 Anti-Imperialist Writings on the Philippine-American War_, published by
Syracuse UP in 1992.  He is also the creator of _Mark Twain Resources on the
World Wide Web_ and _Anti-Imperialism in the United States 1898-1935_ sites
on the WWW.

"The Bible According to Mark Twain:  The Way it Was"
Howard G. Baetzhold and Joseph B. McCullough
Howard Baetzhold and Joseph McCullough are the editors of the recently
published _The Bible According to Mark Twain:  Writings of Heaven, Eden, and
the Flood_ published by U of Georgia P.  Baetzhold is Rebecca Clifton Reade
Professor of English Emeritus at Butler University and the Elmira College
Center for Mark Twain Studies' first John S. Tuckey Memorial Research Fellow.
 He is the author of _Mark Twain & John Bull:  The British Connection_
published by Indiana UP in 1970.  McCullough is Professor of English at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  He is a member of the 1997 Conference
Committee for "The State of Mark Twain Studies," to be held at Elmira
College, August 14-16, 1997.

"Editorial Practice at the Mark Twain Project:  The Example of Mark Twain's
San Francisco Correspondence for the Territorial Enterprise"  Richard Bucci
Richard Bucci is an editor at The Mark Twain Project of the Bancroft Library
at the University of California, Berkeley.  His works include _Mark Twain's
Letters Volume 1 & 2_ and the forthcoming Volumes 3 & 4 of _Early Tales &
Sketches_ by Mark Twain.

Since seating is limited, please make a reservation by calling Elmira College
at 607/735-1800.  These lectures are free and open to anyone.
