It's also worth looking at Letters I for an account of the "Indian
troubles" in the mining district on the California/Nevada border.  Since
the natives made more difficult Clemens's efforts to strike it rich,
some of his animus may have been motivated by greed. His later diatribes
against imperialism may have been to some degree expiatory.
