Thanks to everyone who responded to my plea for the meaning of "de bills"
in Ch. 4 of Huck. The overwhelming majority feel that it means
"foreordained" or in the cards. I'm still confused as to what the entire
prophesy means. Why is Jim warning Huck to stay away from the water when
it is their central means of escape? What is he foreshadowing for Huck
later in the story? How will Huck be "hung?"
Thanks again,
Patti
