Colleagues may be interested to know that British poet and dramatist Adrian Mitchell (see http://www.adrianmitchell.co.uk) wrote 'a play with songs based on Mark Twain's writings and his adventures in the afterlife' which was produced (by director Richard Eyre) at Nottingham Playhouse - then a successful avant garde theatre - in 1977. It was also produced at the Edinburgh Festival and on BBC Radio. Music was by Mike Westbrook, a British jazz musician. I saw it and remember it as being impressive, if a touch overlong (!), with Susy's death very much at the play's centre! (Though my memory may be faulty!). Actors Mick Ford, Sylvester McCoy and Trevor Peacock played Twian at various stages in his life. The program notes are interesting, stating that about three-quarters of the play's material 'were lifted' from Twain's own words, and giving sources including Justin Kaplan's biography, with the comment: 'Mr Kaplan's facts are useful but he is short on affection.' I have a copy of the play's transcript and the theatre program. I will be donating this to a library or Twain collection shortly, and when I do, I will let Forum members know where it has been placed. Cheers.
