The vulnerability that was discovered with Microsoft's Internet Explorer
web browser last week has been addressed by Microsoft with a security
update that fixes the issue.

Your York workstation will be looked after by UIT or your local IT support
group.

For home computers, the Windows Automatic Update should be enabled (the
recommended setting) and you will not need to take any action because this
security update will be downloaded and installed automatically.

Please see the following website for more information on PROTECTING YOUR
COMPUTING DEVICES:

Once this patch has been applied, those who have switched to another
browser may safely switch back to IE if they prefer (but NOT on Windows
XP).

Although Microsoft has provided a patch for Windows XP this time, this
does not change UIT's position that users should absolutely avoid use
of IE, along with other included software, on Windows XP. On XP, third
party browsers like Firefox and Chrome are recommended.

Subject: ***Internet Explorer Vulnerability***

***PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY***

Microsoft has released a security advisory for a zero-day vulnerability that
affects all versions of Internet Explorer. There is currently no patch
available for this vulnerability and Microsoft has not provided a date for the
release of the patch.

More details on the security advisory can be found at
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/security/2963983

Until a patch is released, UIT recommends the use of an alternate web browser
like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Windows XP users are more susceptible to the flaw because Microsoft will not be
releasing any updates for its version of Internet Explorer.
