The former capital of two empires, the city has inherited a rich and unique collection of Byzantine and Ottoman masterpieces of art and architecture, as well as a beautiful natural setting to offer inhabitants and visitors alike. Robert College, founded in Istanbul by Dr. Cyrus Hamlin and Mr. Christopher Rheinlander Robert in 1863, was the first American institution of higher learning outside the United States. In 1971, after over hundred years of superior service to the nation and to the academic community at large, its Board of Trustees turned over Robert College to the Turkish Government. Thus, Bogazigi University, the official successor to Robert College, was inaugurated on the same campus in 1971. Bogazigi University is situated on a hill on the European side of the Bosphorus after which it is named. It overlooks the Rumeli fortress built in 1452 and the two new suspension bridges connecting the European and the Asian (Anatolian) parts of the city. Because of the University's unique setting it enjoys a peaceful and magnificent view over the Bosphorus, but is within easy reach (a 30-minute drive) of the cultural facilities of the city center. The ancient buildings, renovated within the last few years, and the carefully preserved surrounding woodlands add distinction to this most attractive university campus.
