>I confess ancient ignorance, but which Brown do you mean? William Wells Brown, ex-slave, was one of the great African Americans of the 19th century. His novel, "Clotel: The President's Daughter," was the first novel published by an African American. The title character is the illegitimate mulatto daughter of Thomas Jefferson by way of Sally Hemings, although a different name is used -- a story lately in the news thanks to DNA and so forth. I believe the pub. date was around 1853 but the volume is not handy, so I would not swear to it. . . . * * * * * * * * * * * * * Dr. Harold K.
