William Wells Brown, ex-slave, was one of the great African Americans of
the 19th century.   His novel,  "Clotel:  The President's Daughter," was
the first novel published by an African American.  The title character is
the illegitimate mulatto daughter of Thomas Jefferson by way of Sally
Hemings, although a different name is used -- a story lately in the news
thanks to DNA and so forth.  I believe the pub. date was around 1853 but
the volume is not handy, so I would not swear to it. . . .
