----------------- HES POSTING ----------------- I was a graduate student in the mid-1960's. It was standard at the time to assign two articles by Francis Bator: "The Simple Analytics of Welfare Maximization," American Economic Review, March 1957, and "The Anatomy of Market Failure," Quarterly Journal of Economics 1958. My memory is that the AER piece especially is a masterful exposition, and well worth looking at. My impression is that intermediate micro text discussions of welfare economics reflected Bator's treatment for many years after publication of these articles. Robert S.
