We would like to inform IHMEC members about our summer program in
medical Spanish and international health for first and second year
medical students in Ecuador. We have just returned from Ecuador where
we have finalized details for this summer. Throughout the length of
the program medical Spanish language instruction will be provided. The
first two weeks will emphasize group visits to a variety of urban and
rural health facilities, with a coordinated introductory seminar
series in international health. Weeks 3 and 4 will center on
individual clinic and other healthcare experiences in either an urban
or rural setting. Dates of the program are June 11 - July 8, 2000.

Attached below is information about the program. Of note is that we
will both be onsite for the entire period, to maintain what we believe
is a high quality experience for participants. Please feel free to be
in communication at any time if you might wish to discuss more details
with us.

INTERHEALTH SOUTH AMERICA

SUMMER STUDY TOUR AND PROGRAM IN
INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AND MEDICAL SPANISH
FOR 1ST AND 2ND YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS

ECUADOR, SOUTH AMERICA

JUNE 11 - JULY 8, 2000

The Interhealth South America Summer Program is a study tour
introduction to South American primary and community health care,
combined with medical Spanish language for first and second year
medical students. The principal objectives of the program are to
provide an economically accessible guided field experience for
exploration of international health opportunities, integrated with
immersion language study early in medical student careers. During the
first half of the program the entire group visits healthcare
facilities in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador while studying medical
Spanish under the guidance of physician program directors. For the
final two weeks participants select a concentration in either an urban
or rural healthcare environment while continuing immersion language
study. The language portion of the program emphasizes medical
vocabulary acquisition and use, and patient interviewing skills
development. Program components include:

* Seminar introduction to healthcare provision in South America
* Observation of primary and community healthcare programs
* Tours of Andes Mountains sites demonstrating a variety of natural
environments
* Basic/intermediate level medical Spanish language instruction
* Introduction to medical interviewing in Spanish
* Homestay culture exchange with Ecuadorian families

PROGRAM PREREQUISITES:
1. Completion of first or second year of medical school.
2. Completion of an introductory level course in Spanish.
