Henry George, in "The Science of Political Economy" (1897), Book II, 
Chap.XV, has a discussion of "goods" and "good". 
 
He writes: "There is in English no singular of the word "goods", and the 
reason is that there is no need for one, since when we want to express the 
idea of a single item or article in a lot of goods, it is better to use the 
specific noun..."
