----------------- HES POSTING ----------------- Ian, The quote you refer to from Keynes comes from a letter he wrote to Sterling Lamprecht of Amherst College on 19 June 1940. Lamprecht had sent Keynes a paper on Hobbes. The complete sentence you refer to reads: "For the first time for more than two centuries Hobbes has more message for us than Locke". A larger extract from this letter is included in Robert Skidelsky's third volume of his Keynes bio, p.74. The original letter is in the Keynes Papers at Kings College, Cambridge. This letter is but another example of how 'Hawkish' Keynes was on foreign policy in the lead up, and during, WW2. I am currently engaged in writing a paper to this end - and hopefully dispelling the notion that Keynes was an 'appeaser'.
