I have just come across a 1934 magazine ad for soup which shows a full length portrayal of Twain holding a huge tomato in his had. The text cites the quote about cauliflower being cabbage with a college education and then wonders what Twain would say about the huge soup tomatoes. What was the state of copyright at that time? Would such a use of the Twain image have been licensed that year before his centennial? Dennis Kelly
