In general I find that the best tool to explore the "badlands" between professional economic discourse & its lay (popular & political) translation can best be addressed with rhetorical analysis. Many have expressed doubts concerning the usefulness of all these " cultural-studies" in economics (rhetoric, postmodernism, etc.).
