He has done a lot of work in the broad area of culture competency in medical practice as well specifically in regard to caring for patients of Asian origin. He has written a book, Culture, Illness and Care - Clinical Lessons from Anthropologic and Cross Cultural Research. Also, he may have done some work specifically in the area of physician training. I have seen reference to "eight questions," an explanatory model he proposes that all MDs should employ when interacting with patients of non-Western cultures. Does anyone know of evidence that individual lack of competence in diversity & cultural competency in health care professionals (particularly physicians) leads to poor health outcomes for groups? Is anyone familiar with successful models of physician training on cultural competency and diversity? We would be happy to share the findings on both of these topics. Thanks.
