I don't know of anyone who would say that the later work is not dark,
or that his output was altered from his more published period.   Some
have mistook this as marking a diminution of his creative ability.  The
output, though, is still remarkable, though most of the work is
unfinished and unpublished.  The debate centers on a couple of
different quetsions:

1.  whether or not this darkness in his work is difference in kind or
degree,

2. whether or not the personal trials--family deaths, bankruptcy-- are
the sole or major reason for the tone and for the lack of publication.
