Tenth annual ESHET conference in Porto (Portugal), 28-30 April 2006. Call for papers The theme of the Conference is "The Popularisation of Economic Ideas". The aim of this theme is to bring together a number of contributors to discuss the development and dissemination of both Political Economy and Economics through the actions of academic writers and those who spread and popularised their ideas. This took place through the work of leading academic economists and professors of economics who produced manuals and textbooks, as well as through the contributions of non-specialist writers from the worlds of journalism, fiction and other professions. Although not necessarily innovative in what concerns economic analysis, the contributions of the popularisers were often influential and were sometimes best- sellers - even on an international basis. These authors and their works may be therefore considered in a variety of dimensions. Possible questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to, the following: Did economics progress through the processes of popularisation? Did the work of popularisers always lag behind other types of economic literature (essays, pamphlets, journal articles) or did some of them convey path breaking ideas? How did these forms of economic discourse evolve over time? What were the aims of the popularisers? How are we to assess the real importance of popularisation for the institutionalisation of economics? Is it possible to identify national characteristics in the dissemination and teaching of economics? Selected papers on the Conference theme will be published in a volume, but proposals for papers or sessions on all other aspects of the history of economic thought are also welcome. Submit an abstract of no more than 200 words for a paper, or no more than 400 words for a session, before 31 December 2005.
