In my perspective, it is important to examine the underlying causes of income disparities and poverty - that is how oppression in the form of racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism etc are underlying factors which both affect inviduals in material and psychological ways, which benefit socially dominant groups to the deteriment of those who experience systemic and personal oppression. Because of the often unspoken interpretation that proverty or poor neighbourhoods = people of colour, it is important that discussions on crime and poverty also include a broader analysis on racism, etc as root causes. On this note, there is a panel discussion coming up on Jan 29th examining the racialization of crime and responses to how the issue of gun violence is being portrayed by the media and "addressed" by those in positions of power.
