That's true, but it happened in 1909, a few months before Twain's own death, so the fact doesn't really have a lot of explanatory power re earlier Christmases. My understanding has always been simply that Susie's death cast a pall -- probably to a pathological degree -- over the holidays the family had formerly celebrated so joyously. Peter Salwen
