I try again - Hope it arrives this time.

It is on PubMed but I am afraid the journal does not give free access to its papers. Most academic institutions will probably have access through an institutional subscription.

This paper may be relevant.

Kemm JR (2006) The limitations of evidence based public health. Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice 12, 319-324.

Not sure whether it count as solid academic work, polemic or rant.

Cheers

Subject: FW: [SDOH] Limitations of "evidence-based" health policy - request for assistance

Dear colleagues,

Since evidence gathering is an important element of health impact assessment, I thought you - as colleagues on the HIA listserv - would be a great source of knowledge/wisdom for the request for assistance put forward by another Canadian colleague on the Social Determinants of Health listserv (see original message below).

As many of us would stand to learn from your responses, may I suggest you post them to the SDoH listserv directly via [log in to unmask].

The only response on the SDoH listserv to day is the recommendation by Prof. Dennis Raphael of the following resource:

    BMJ 2001; 322:184-185 ( 27 January )
    Editorials
    How policy informs the evidence
"Evidence based" thinking can lead to debased policy making
...snip...
Thanks in advance,

Karen

Dear Colleagues,

In the course of work on a paper on “policy space” for the Commission on Social Determinants of Health, a very interesting point has come up having to do with how the current vogue for “evidence-based” health policy may tend to create a bias in favour of individualized remedies rather than collective choices or changes in social policy.  If anyone on the list is aware of solid academic work (i.e., not just polemic) on this point, I would very much appreciate the citation or link.  Please feel free to reply off-list if you prefer.
