Dear Group: This occurred to me on my walk with Odin, my guide dog. I personally look at Twain's life after Olivia's death as being a rather dark period with no one to really direct him. In retrospect however, could it not also be argued that the fiasco with the type setting machine which plunged the "good gentleman" into bankruptcy might also have constituted a "dark period".
