Subject: [SDOH] Update on social inequities advocacy work (f/u from my call out for your assistance on attributable risk of disease(s) r/t income)

Hello to all advocates for the elimination of social inequities in health:

First, I want to thank all of you for your assistance and especially Dennis for your quick replies. I am pleased to send this email to all of you by way of update on some recent activities related to social inequities in health and public health.

Dr. Penny Sutcliffe (MOH Sudbury), Dr. Pete Sarsfield (MOH Thunder Bay), Dr. Chuck Gardner (MOH Simcoe-Muskoka), Sandra Laclé and Isabelle Michel (Public Health Directors here in Sudbury) had an opportunity to attend a meeting with the Ministries of Health Promotion, Health and Long-Term Care and Children and Youth Services about social inequities in health and public health on January 15, 2007. This meeting was in follow up to the report "A Framework to Integrate Social and Economic Determinants of Health into the Ontario Public Health Mandate: A Discussion Paper", submitted to the CMOH office in April 2006. This document was endorsed by the Council of Ontario Medical Officers of Health (COMOH) and was intended to inform the current mandate review process. It was written in follow up to the Social Determinants of Health Stream of the Joint alPHa/OPHA 2005 Conference led by Sudbury in consultation with a Reference Panel, and the related motions at the respective 2005 AGMs of alPHa and OPHA.

We prepared a background document, "Social Inequities in Health", in preparation for the January 15 meeting (we cannot submit attachment so if you wanted an e-copy, I could email it to you). The background document essentially updates the Framework to Integrate Social and Economic Determinants of Health into the Ontario Public Health Mandate discussion paper and incorporates additional literature and some further analysis based on our experiences and thinking over this past year.

As many will be aware, we are anticipating that the draft revised public health mandate will be circulated for consultation in February. We are hopeful that this would present public health colleagues in Ontario another opportunity to try to ensure that social inequities in health are present in the local public health mandate. We hope that the Social Inequities in Health document will be helpful in this review of the draft revised mandate given this 'equity lens'.
