Sharon, I think the particular point that Cable and others were making about the Freedman's case was that this was in the 1880s, long after the Civil War, when convict & Lease practices wich focussed on the Negro, in effect returned him to slavery--part of a web of injustices that attempted to keep the blacks under control.
