Susy's letters to Brownell are preserved at Hamilton College and were published in a Master's thesis by Michelle Cotton, which I have. I don't know if Louise's letters to Susy survive. I've read all of Susy's letters, and even after taking into account the tendency of 19th century women to use language that could easily be mistaken for lesbian expressions of love today, there are at least four letters that seem to point explicitly toward a lesbian relationship. It cannot be proven, of course. At the very least Susy comes across as the suitor and very needy. Susy died in the "mahogany room" (the guest bedroom) downstairs and the family left behind all of the furniture from that room. When the house was sold in 1903, the new owners sold off the furniture that was stored in the carriage house. I have a mahogany framed mirror that was sold off in 1903 that is probably from that room. The Hartford house has the bed and a dresser from that room, I think. At least some of Susy's library ended up with Clara, who sold them off with her father's books in 1951, and I have a few of Susy's books. But I've not seen a trace of any letters from anyone written to Susy. Kevin Mac Donnell Austin TX
