DIRECTOR, SCHOOL OF HEALTH INFORMATION SCIENCE
The University of Victoria
invites applications for the position of Director, School of Health Information
Science. As one of Canada's leading universities, the University of Victoria
has earned a reputation for commitment to research, scholarship and work-integrated
learning. UVic provides both students and faculty with a unique learning

and international initiatives. Located on the southern tip of Vancouver
Island, the city of Victoria is renowned for its beauty and has easy connections
to Vancouver and Seattle.
The mission of the School
of Health Information Science (http://hinf.uvic.ca)
is to improve health care delivery systems by educating individuals to
be effective developers, users and managers of health information resources;
by advancing knowledge through research; and by providing a consultative
service to the health care community. The School's view of health information
encompasses technological, clinical, sociological, epidemiological, administrative,
legal, and economic perspectives. The School's team currently consists
of six full-time faculty, two professional staff, four secretarial staff
and approximately 30 part-time faculty. The majority of the School's full-time
and part-time faculty have academic and/or professional health backgrounds.
In addition to its full-time and part-time faculty, the School makes extensive
use of guest lecturers; over 300 professionals from organizations across
Canada have contributed to the School's curriculum over the past 25 years.
The School is in the midst of significant growth and offers a Bachelor
of Science in Health Information Science, a Bachelor of Science with a
combined major in Computer Science and a Master of Science in Health Informatics
on campus as well as a distance education format. The School currently
enrolls 126 undergraduate students and 79 graduate students. Further expansion
at the graduate level is anticipated. New initiatives including a combined
Masters degree with the School of Nursing and a flexible, formalized PhD
program in Health Informatics are being planned.
This position provides
an exceptional opportunity to provide academic and organizational direction
to this growing academic program including encouraging and facilitating
research and scholarship by colleagues and curriculum development and innovation
in teaching and learning. Administrative experience including human resource
management, preparation and administration of budgets and experience in
enrolment management is very important and previous university administrative
experience would be an asset. Excellent communication skills, demonstrated
capacity for leadership within the University and the community, and a
participatory management style are essential. Further information concerning

The candidate will have
a strong record of research and teaching in undergraduate and graduate
programs and a strong record of publication in top-tier journals in the
health informatics field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated,
or have the potential for strong academic leadership and innovation and
will have an international reputation in the field of health informatics.
The appointment will be effective July 1, 2009 or as soon as possible after
July 1st, and usually will be for a five-year term. Candidates should have
a Ph.D. and have a national or international reputation as a scholar in
the field of health informatics with the qualifications and standing to
be appointed as a tenured Associate Professor or Professor.
