For example, after much advocacy from public health practitioners, Ontario's Public Health Standards (OPHS) now explicitly recognize that, "Addressing determinants of health and reducing health inequities are fundamental to the work of public health in Ontario. Effective public health programs and services consider the impact of the determinants of health on the achievement of intended health outcomes." =20 =20 "Reducing inequities in health through a population approach", has also been included in the strategic framework of Ontario's newly formed Agency for Health Protection and Promotion. =20 Supported by these mandates, I believe (and am hopeful) that we will now see this type of formalized commitment to action from health units across the province. However, in the absence of statements such as Hamilton's (and Sudbury & District Health Unit's 2005 statement) it is important that we recognize that much "good news" is still being made through less structured and less publicized advocacy, action and partnerships across the province and beyond. =20 It is great to see this momentum continue to build. As we see and continue to spread the word about examples such as Hamilton's, we might just get to our "tipping point". =20 Stephanie Lefebvre, MSW Policy & Planning Specialist Resources, Research, Evaluation & Development Division Sudbury & District Health Unit 1300 Paris Street Sudbury, ON P3E 3A3 (705) 522-9200, ext. 277 From: Social Determinants of Health [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Sivan Bomze Sent: July 2, 2009 7:02 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [SDOH] good news also available here... =20 Just wondering, from the perspective of the SDOH listers, why do you think this is happening now???
