A bit of a different view on timing...

First off, huge kudos to Hamilton for formalizing - through this SDOH
position statement - much of the good work that I'm sure has been going
on in Hamilton for years.
=20
From our local public health unit perspective, rather than viewing this
recent momentum as sudden - "Why suddenly now are these issues seemingly
more palatable" - I tend to see it more as support to shift towards
making current/existing actions more explicit through formalized
structures (position statements, planning processes, internal equity
audits etc.)
=20
Our experience in Sudbury, ON has connected us with many public health
practitioners, community agencies and others from across the province
and beyond who have been committed to advancing action on SDOH and
health inequities for years/decades. For example, after much advocacy
from public health practitioners, Ontario's Public Health Standards
(OPHS) now explicitly recognize that, "Addressing determinants of health
and reducing health inequities are fundamental to the work of public
health in Ontario. Effective public health programs and services
consider the impact of the determinants of health on the achievement of
intended health outcomes." =20

"Reducing inequities in health through a population approach", has also
been included in the strategic framework of Ontario's newly formed
Agency for Health Protection and Promotion.

Supported by these mandates, I believe (and am hopeful) that we will now
see this type of formalized commitment to action from health units
across the province. However, in the absence of statements such as
Hamilton's (and Sudbury & District Health Unit's 2005 statement) it is
important that we recognize that much "good news" is still being made
through less structured and less publicized advocacy, action and
partnerships across the province and beyond.

It is great to see this momentum continue to build. As we see and
continue to spread the word about examples such as Hamilton's, we might
just get to our "tipping point".
