It bothered me that I could not cite a source for Twain's "master" comment,
but I found it in Leon Edel's biography of James, p 37 of his volume
covering the years 1901-16. There are several editions of Edel, both 5 and
single volume editions, so the page could vary from one ed to another.

Also cf Gribben MT's Library, p 350 for a diary entry by Isabel Lyon who
said Twain was sneaking into her study to get a knife to open the pages of
James' THE GOLDEN BOWL.
